Improved performance in Bayer AG’s Life Science business helped its profit jump 14 percent in the second quarter.

On Wednesday, the Germany-based company reported a net profit of 953 million euros ($1.28 billion) in the quarter, compared to 841 million euros in the same quarter in 2013.

Total sales in North America for the quarter were 2.7 billion euros, or $3.6 billion when using a $1.37 per EUR average exchange rate. Worldwide sales were 10.5 billion euros, or $14 billion.

Sales in Bayer’s MaterialScience business, which is headquartered in Pittsburgh, were down slightly from 2.87 billion euros in the second quarter of 2013 to 2.86 billion euros in 2014.
